How to say “Muhammad” in Arabic, with pronunciation and real example sentences from OpenArabic texts.
فَابْتَعَثَ اللَّهُ مُحَمَّدًا
So Allah sent Muhammad.
مُحَمَّدًا — Muhammad. A proper name in the accusative shape, marking it as the one sent, the direct object of the verb. The ending alone, with no helper word, signals that this is the receiver of the action.
From: Finding the Prophet's Way →قَالَ زَعَمَ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا أَخْبَرَهُمْ أَنَّهُمْ قَاتِلِيَّ،
He said, "He claimed that Muhammad had told them that they were my killers."
مُحَمَّدًا — Muhammad. A proper name standing as the topic of the 'that' clause, wearing the object (accusative) ending because the strong 'that' particle precedes it. The particle forces that case even though the name is what the clause is about.
From: Warning Before the Battle of Badr →وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ
And I testify that Muhammad is the Messenger of God.
مُحَمَّدًا — Muhammad. The name 'Muhammad' in the object-style ending forced by the 'that'-particle before it, though in meaning it is the subject of the statement. This case shift signals it sits under that particle inside the reported clause.
From: What Was Created First →فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه و سلم الْإِسْلَامُ أَنْ تَشْهَدَ أَنْ لَا إلَهَ إلَّا اللَّهُ وَأَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ، وَتُقِيمَ الصَّلَاةَ،
The Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, said: Islam is to bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except God and that Muhammad is the Messenger of God, and to establish the prayer.
مُحَمَّدًا — Muhammad. Carries the accusative ending (the -an you can hear) because it is the noun seized by the emphatic 'that'-particle just before it; that particle always throws its first noun into the accusative. It is the subject of the statement 'that Muhammad is the Messenger', even though its case looks object-like. The predicate naming him 'Messenger' follows in the nominative.
