And it has been established in the two Sahih collections from Ibn Mas'ud from the Prophet that he said:
Mas'ud. The father's name completing the 'son of' link, in the genitive. It finishes identifying the first narrator in the chain.
From: Truthfulness and Righteousness →
Abd Allah ibn Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated from Sa'd ibn Mu'adh,
Mas'ud. The father's name closing the 'son of' pairing, in the 'of' (genitive) shape because that linking word governs it. It completes the speaker's full lineage.
From: Warning Before the Battle of Badr →
Abdullah ibn Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him, said.
Mas'ud. A proper name in the genitive, the owner half of 'son of Mas'ud', so its case is set by that owned-by role. It completes the man's full lineage name.
