How to say “around” in Arabic, with pronunciation and real example sentences from OpenArabic texts.
فَخَرَجَ بِهِ قَرِيبًا مِنْ نِصْفِ النَّهَارِ
So he went out with him around midday.
قَرِيبًا — around. An object-shaped (accusative) word used adverbially to give an approximation — 'roughly, about'. Arabic often puts a noun or adjective in this accusative state to make it function like an adverb of degree.
From: Warning Before the Battle of Badr →قَالَ لَا، مَا أُرِيدُ أَنْ أَجُوزَ مَعَهُمْ إِلَّا قَرِيبًا
He said, "No; I do not intend to go with them except nearby."
قَرِيبًا — nearby. An object-shaped (accusative) word used adverbially to mark extent — only 'a short way'. Arabic puts this word in the accusative state to make it work like an adverb of distance, completing the exception.
