كُنَّا فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ لَا نَعُدُّ النِّسَاءَ شَيْئًا،
We were in the Age of Ignorance; we did not regard women as anything,
نَعُدُّ — we regard. Present-tense verb 'we reckon/count' with the 'we' subject built into its prefix; under the past helper and the negator it reads as a denied past habit. Its doubled middle is the inner shape of this particular verb.
