سُئِلَ بَعْضُ الْحُكَمَاءِ مَا الْحِكْمَةُ
Some of the wise were asked, 'What is wisdom?'
الْحِكْمَةُ — wisdom. The noun 'wisdom', made definite by al- ('the'), standing as the thing the question is about in a verbless 'what is X?'. With no verb needed, the question word and this definite noun together form the whole question.
