How to say “acted insolently” in Arabic, with pronunciation and real example sentences from OpenArabic texts.
وقسر بقهره من تكبر وتعاتى،
And He subdued by His might those who acted arrogantly and insolently,
وَتَعَاتَى — and he acted insolently. The 'and' joins a second describing verb and keeps it under the same 'whoever', so it shares that subject. The past-tense reflexive verb means 'acted insolently', adding a second trait to the proud person, both of which provoked his being subdued.
From: Death and Decree →ما تأتي عبرة مثل أن أباك وأمك ماتا،
No lesson strikes home like the fact that your father and your mother have died.
تعاتى — and contumacious. A connector plus a form meaning 'and were defiant', adding a second trait to the arrogant. The 'and' pairs it with the prior descriptor, extending the description of the subdued group.
