وَقَدْ كَانَ شُعْبَةُ يُحَدِّثُ، فَإِذَا رَأَى الْمَزِيدُ النَّحْوِيُّ قَالَ إِنَّهُ أَبُو زَيْدٍ الْبَسِيطُ
And indeed Shu'ba used to narrate, and whenever al-Mazid the grammarian saw him, he would say: Indeed he is Abu Zayd al-Basit:
الْمَزِيدُ — al-Mazid. The al- makes this proper name definite as a fixed title. It stands as the doer of the seeing verb before it, so it serves as the subject of 'saw', identifying who did the looking.
