How to say “alms” in Arabic, with pronunciation and real example sentences from OpenArabic texts.
Prayer, fasting, charity, and pilgrimage, though burdensome on the body, are comfort for the heart and purification for the soul.
وَالزَّكَاةُ — and charity. The connector 'and' fused to the third item, 'and the alms', continuing the list of the topic. It too sits as topic with its 'the'.
From: Facing God's Tests →
And give the obligatory charity, fast during Ramadan, and perform the pilgrimage to the House if you are able to find a way to it.
الزَّكَاةَ — the obligatory charity. The definite object of 'give', marked with al- ('the') and standing in the accusative as the thing handed over. It names the specific duty being fulfilled. The accusative ending is what flags it as the receiver of the giving rather than the giver.
