وَيَكُونُ بَيْنَهُمَا كَمَا بَيْنَ الْمَشْرِقِ وَالْمَغْرِبِ
And it will be between them as between the east and the west.
الْمشرق — the east. This is a directional noun governed by the preceding 'between', so it sits in the (genitive); its al- makes it definite, 'the east'. It is one end of the simile's distance. Its case is the effect of the preposition before it.
