How to say “hypocrisy” in Arabic, with pronunciation and real example sentences from OpenArabic texts.
وصدقةٌ رياءً تفقد وزنها قبل أن تمسّ الكفّة
and charity with hypocrisy loses its weight before it even touches the scale.
رِيَاءً — with hypocrisy. 'out of showing off', accusative as a cause-word — done for display; the accusative of reason ('done for the sake of').
From: When Hidden Deeds Are Shown →فالله يوفقك، ويبصرك رشدك، ويوقظك من رقدة الجهل والرياء
May Allah guide you, make you see your right path, and awaken you from the slumber of ignorance and hypocrisy.
وَالرِّيَاءِ — and hypocrisy. Joined on by 'and', this noun is a second owner stacked onto the same possessive phrase, so the slumber belongs to both ignorance and this. The word names showy false piety done to be seen by people, named as a grammatical partner to the first owner.
From: When Recitation Breeds Pride →وَالنَّوْعُ الثَّانِي مِنَ الشِّرْكِ الرِّيَاءُ بِالْأَعْمَالِ،
The second type of shirk (associating partners with Allah) is showing off with deeds.
الرِّيَاءُ — showing off. This noun, with its 'the', is the predicate of the verbless sentence, identifying what the second type is. Arabic states it simply by juxtaposing the two definite nouns, with no linking verb.
From: The Hidden Idolatry →قَالَ الرِّيَاءُ، يَقُولُ اللهُ تَعَالَى يَوْمَ يُجَازِي الْعِبَادَ بِأَعْمَالِهِمْ اذْهَبُوا إِلَى الَّذِينَ كُنْتُمْ تُرَاءُونَهُمْ بِأَعْمَالِكُمْ فِي الدُّنْيَا فَانْظُرُوا هَلْ تَجِدُونَ عِنْدَهُمْ جَزَاءً
He said: 'It is showing off. Allah will say on the Day He recompenses people for their deeds: Go to those for whom you showed off in the world and see if you find any reward with them.'
الرِّيَاءُ — showing off. This noun, with its 'the', stands alone as the one-word answer and the predicate of an understood 'it is showing off'. Arabic needs no 'is'; the defined noun by itself states the identification.
