أَنْفُضُ — I brushed off. A present-tense verb with its 'I' subject built in, used here for an action ongoing at the time, 'I kept brushing off'. Set against the surrounding past, this present paints a backgrounded, continuing activity. Arabic uses the present shape this way to show simultaneity.
