So indeed, before he entered into this field, he was enlightened and radiant, upon his face the mark of the pious predecessors,
مُنَوِّرًا — enlightened. This is an active participle, 'illumined/illuminating', a verb-derived adjective serving as the predicate of 'was', in the indefinite accusative as such predicates are. It names the bright state he was in before, agreeing with the subject of 'was'.
