Arabic vocabulary
How to say “instead” in Arabic, with pronunciation and an example from OpenArabic texts.
فقال الوالي إذاً خذ الناقة واعطه حمارك بدل الدراهم
The governor said: Then take the camel and give him your donkey instead of the dirhams.
بَدَلَ — instead of. This is a noun 'substitute for, in place of' used as a connector before another noun. It heads a possessive pairing, 'in place of the dirhams', and its accusative ending lets it work as this adverbial 'instead of'. It sets up the swap relationship.
