الْإِسْلَامِيِّ — Islamic. A relational adjective ('Islamic') modifying the preceding noun. It agrees with that noun in being definite (it too carries al-), in gender, and in the genitive case, which is how Arabic shows an adjective is bound to its noun. Together they form 'the Islamic world'.
