How to say “last” in Arabic, with pronunciation and real example sentences from OpenArabic texts.
فالأصل الصالح لا يزول بزلةٍ ما دام قائمًا
for a righteous origin does not vanish with a single misstep as long as it stands.
دَامَ — it endures. Past 'lasted, kept being' — with 'ma' it is 'ma dama' = 'as long as it remains'; it takes an accusative predicate.
From: When Hidden Deeds Are Shown →وَكَانَ شَيْخٌ يَدُورُ فِي الْمَجَالِسِ وَيَقُولُ مَنْ سَرُّهُ أَنْ تَدُومَ لَهُ الْعَافِيَةُ، فَلْيَتَّقِ اللَّهَ
There was a sheikh who went from gathering to gathering and would say: Whoever wants his well-being to last, let him fear God.
تَدُومَ — may last. A present-tense verb in the subjunctive shape, its trimmed ending forced by the 'that' particle just before it. The subjunctive is the tell that this lasting is the desired outcome, not something already happening. Its subject, 'the well-being', comes after, so the wish is 'that well-being last for him'.
