أَئِمَّةُ — the leaders of. This noun is the front of a possessive pairing, 'the leaders of the Muslims', and as the head it stays bare of 'the' while taking its definiteness from the owner next. Its subject ending marks it as the doers of the saying, named after the singular verb in the usual order.
