How to say “like” in Arabic, with pronunciation and real example sentences from OpenArabic texts.
المعصيةُ تُثقب ثوبَ العمل كما تفعل العُثّةُ بالقطن؛
Sin pierces the garment of a deed like a moth does to cotton;
كَمَا — just as. 'just as', comparison particle opening a parallel clause (the simile).
From: When Hidden Deeds Are Shown →ثم قال والذي نفسي بيده إن ما بين المصراعين من مصاريع الجنة كما بين مكة وهجر، أو كما بين مكة وبصرى
Then he said: "By the One in whose hand is my soul, indeed, the distance between the two panels of the gates of Paradise is as between Mecca and Hajar, or as between Mecca and Busra."
كَمَا — just as. A comparison-word fused from 'like' plus 'what', giving 'just as'; it opens the yardstick clause that measures the distance. The fusion is what makes one word do 'as/like that which'.
From: The Prophet's Intercession →ثم قال والذي نفسي بيده إن ما بين المصراعين من مصاريع الجنة كما بين مكة وهجر، أو كما بين مكة وبصرى
Then he said: "By the One in whose hand is my soul, indeed, the distance between the two panels of the gates of Paradise is as between Mecca and Hajar, or as between Mecca and Busra."
كَمَا — just as. 'Just as' again, the 'like'-plus-'what' fusion, opening a second yardstick clause after 'or'; it frames the alternative comparison. The fusion does 'as/like that which' in one word.
