How to say “sin” in Arabic, with pronunciation and real example sentences from OpenArabic texts.
المعصيةُ تُثقب ثوبَ العمل كما تفعل العُثّةُ بالقطن؛
Sin pierces the garment of a deed like a moth does to cotton;
الْمَعْصِيَةُ — The sin. 'the sin, disobedience', fronted subject, nominative.
From: When Hidden Deeds Are Shown →وهي تطلب منه في كل وقت ما تهواه، وتزين له المعاصي، وتصعب عليه الطاعات
It seeks from him at all times what it desires, embellishes sins for him, and makes acts of worship difficult for him.
المَعَاصِي — the sins. This is the object of 'adorns', so it stands in the object case, with 'the' marking the known category of sins. As a plural with a weak final letter its ending takes a special shape, but its job is the direct object the self makes attractive.
From: Struggling Against the Self →ومن زرع فيها معصية، حصد النار والندم
And whoever planted disobedience in it will harvest hellfire and regret.
مَعْصِيَةً — disobedience. This is the object of 'planted', so it stands in the object case, indefinite without 'the', 'disobedience'. It is the bad seed sown, set against the 'obedience' of the parallel sentence.
From: Celebration and the Final Hour →وقد نهاكم مولاكم عَن طَاعَته وأمركم بمعصيته
And your Lord has forbidden you from obeying him and commanded you to disobey him.
بِمَعْصِيَتِهِ — to disobey him. This is the preposition 'with, to' merged with 'disobedience' carrying the attached 'his', a possessive, the disobedience toward Satan. The verb 'commanded' reaches its object through this preposition, giving 'commanded you to disobey him'. The suffix points back to Satan, so following the reference is key.
From: Adam's Warning →ومعصيته توجب سُكْنى الْجنان ونزول مَحل الرضْوَان
And disobeying him earns dwelling in the gardens and reaching the abode of divine pleasure.
وَمَعْصِيَتُهُ — but disobedience his. This is 'and, but' joined to 'disobedience' carrying the attached 'his', a possessive, the disobedience toward Satan. The 'and' contrasts this with the prior clause, and the suffix points back to Satan, so following the reference matters. It is the subject of the verb that follows.
From: Adam's Warning →وعلى كل واحد ممن عليه طاعته أن يطيعه في طاعة الله، ولا يطيعه في معصية الله،
Everyone required to obey them must obey them in obedience to Allah, and must not obey them in disobedience to Allah.
مَعْصِيَةِ — disobedience. A noun, 'disobedience', in the genitive after 'in', and the head of an 'of' pairing with the divine name. The two give 'disobedience to God', the forbidden sphere where the leader is not obeyed.
