  أُطْمِعَتْ — is made greedy. Passive past-tense verb = 'it was given hope, made to covet'; '-at' marks feminine 'it'.

  If he turned to it, it made him covet his self.

  أَطْمَعَهُ — made him covet. A causative verb ('it made him crave'), built on the pattern that adds a 'cause-to' meaning, carrying the object -hu ('him') on the end. So one word says 'it made him desire'. The subject is the distraction and -hu is the man being made to crave; a phrase follows to say in what.
