Arabic vocabulary
How to say “my example” in Arabic, with pronunciation and real example sentences from OpenArabic texts.
فَمَثَلِي وَمَثَلُكُمْ كَمَثَلِ يَعْقُوبَ وَبَنِيهِ،
My example and your example are like the example of Jacob and his sons.
فَمَثَلِي — so my example. Here fa- is a light discourse 'so', easing into the comparison rather than marking a sharp consequence, and it sits on a noun ('example') carrying the -i 'my' ending. That possessive suffix attaches the noun to the speaker, setting up the first side of the 'my case versus yours' contrast.
From: Aisha Cleared of Slander →يَا وَلِيدٍ رَافِعِ اِسْمَعْ أَقَلِّ لَكَ أَرَاكَ وَاللَّهِ مَثَلِي مَزْجِي الْبِضَاعَةِ ،
O young man Rafi, listen. I tell you, by God, I see you mixing the merchandise like I do.
مَثَلِي — like me. A noun meaning 'likeness' carrying the -i 'my' ending, so literally 'my likeness', used here in the comparison 'like me'. The attached possessive ties the resemblance to the speaker, who is comparing the listener's way of working to his own.
