I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say:
اللهِ — of Allah. Standing second in the 'Messenger of Allah' pair, this name takes the -i ending and owns the noun before it. That pairing is what makes 'Messenger' definite — the Messenger belonging to God — without any separate 'the'.
