إِلَى أَنْ عَلَا الضَّجِيجُ، وَتَرَدَّدَ بِشَهِقَاتِهِ النَّشِيجِ،
Until the clamor rose and reverberated with its plaintive sobs,
النشيج — the plaintive sobs. A descriptive noun in the genitive that follows and characterises the 'sobs' just before it. It stands in apposition, adding a further quality to that noun, and its genitive ending keeps it aligned with the word it elaborates.
