إِلَى أَنْ عَلَا الضَّجِيجُ، وَتَرَدَّدَ بِشَهِقَاتِهِ النَّشِيجِ،
Until the clamor rose and reverberated with its plaintive sobs,
الضجيج — the clamor. A noun made definite by al- 'the', acting as the subject of the verb before it. Its nominative ending marks it as the doer, the thing that rose, distinguishing it from any object in the clause.
