The fundamentals of the religion of the predecessors were faith in Allah, His books, His messengers, His angels,
السَّلَفِ — of the predecessors. This closes the chain — 'religion OF the predecessors' — in the genitive as the final owner. It is a collective name for the earliest Muslim generations, whose creed the sentence is about to list.
