How to say “Shāfiʿī (name)” in Arabic, with pronunciation and an example from OpenArabic texts.
سَمِعْتُ الشَّافِعِيَّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى عَنْهُ يَقُولُ
I heard al-Shafi'i, may Allah be pleased with him, say.
الشَّافِعِيَّ — al-Shafi'i. This relationship-name is the thing heard, so it sits in the object case marked by a final -a. Arabic case endings, not word order alone, tell you it is the object of 'heard' rather than the doer.
