Arabic vocabulary
How to say “sheep” in Arabic, with pronunciation and an example from OpenArabic texts.
قَالَ أَنْ تَلِدَ الْأَمَةُ رَبَّتَهَا، وَأَنْ تَرَى الْحُفَاةَ الْعُرَاةَ الْعَالَةَ رِعَاءَ الشَّاءِ يَتَطَاوَلُونَ فِي الْبُنْيَانِ
He said, 'That a slave woman will give birth to her mistress, and that you will see barefoot, unclothed, destitute shepherds competing in erecting tall buildings.'
الشَّاءِ — of sheep. The owning half of 'shepherds of sheep', carrying the (genitive) ending and lending the pairing its definiteness. It is set right after its head noun with no separate 'of'. This is the same bare-juxtaposition possessive seen across these texts.
