Arabic vocabulary
How to say “stand” in Arabic, with pronunciation and an example from OpenArabic texts.
وَأَنَا مُذّ أَرْبَعِينَ سَنَةٍ أَصُومُ النَّهَارَ وَأَقُومُ اللَّيْلَ،
And for forty years I have fasted during the day and stood in prayer at night,
وَأَقُومُ — and I have risen. The fused wa- is 'and', joining a second lifelong habit in parallel with the fasting, on a present-tense verb with 'I' built in. Under the same 'forty years' frame it too reads as a kept-up habit. The wa- here balances the two devotions, day-fasting and night-vigil, as a matched pair.
