How to say “the cities” in Arabic, with pronunciation and an example from OpenArabic texts.
وَمَفْخَرَةٍ تَفَاخُرٌ بِهَا غَيْرُهَا مِنَ الْمُدُنِ،
and a source of pride that other cities boasted about,
الْمُدُنِ — the cities. A definite plural noun carrying al-, in the genitive because the preceding 'from' governs it. It names the wider category, 'the cities', that the boasting rivals are a portion of. The genitive ending is the visible mark of the preposition's reach.
