أَوْ أَبْعَدُ إِذَا كَانَ أَحَدُهُمَا أَعْقَلَ مِنَ الْآخَرِ
Or even farther, if one of them is more sensible than the other.
الْآخَرِ — the other. This noun is the object of the comparative 'than', so it sits in the (genitive); its al- makes it definite, 'the other'. It is the standard the more sensible man is measured against. Its case is governed by the comparative preposition.
