فَقَالَ إِنْ كَانَ الذَّنْبُ لَنَا فَقَدْ اِسْتَغْفَرْنَاكَ،
He said, "If the sin is ours, then indeed we sought your forgiveness."
الذَّنْبُ — the sin. This definite noun is the thing whose ownership the 'if' clause is weighing, standing in the basic (nominative) shape as the subject of the state verb. Its 'the' marks the specific fault. It names the sin in question.
