  وَأَدْرَكُوا — and they perceived. The connector wa- ('and') fused onto a past-tense 'they' verb (the -u tail marks the plural subject). • فَأَدْرَكُوهُمْ فَأَخَذُوهُمْ،

  Then they caught up with them and seized them.
