How to say “uncle” in Arabic, with pronunciation and real example sentences from OpenArabic texts.
وعلى عمه الذي قال فيه الرسول عمي وصنو أبي،
And upon his uncle, of whom the Prophet said: 'He is my uncle and like my father.'
عَمِّهِ — his uncle. The attached -hi adds 'his', pointing back to the Prophet, so the owner is fused onto the noun. Standing after the preposition 'upon', the noun carries the post-preposition ending, and a relative clause describing the uncle follows.
From: The Story of Prophet Joseph →وعلى عمه الذي قال فيه الرسول عمي وصنو أبي،
And upon his uncle, of whom the Prophet said: 'He is my uncle and like my father.'
عَمِّي — my uncle. The attached -i adds 'my', so 'my uncle'. This sits inside the quoted speech as the predicate of a verbless statement, 'he is my uncle', with no word for 'is' needed before it.
