Arabic vocabulary
How to say “was given” in Arabic, with pronunciation and an example from OpenArabic texts.
فِي أَنْ لَمْ يُعْطِ إِبْلِيسُ اِثْنَيْنِ مِنْ اِبْنِ آدَمٍ وَأَعْطَى أَرْبَعَةً
That Iblis was not given two of the sons of Adam but was given four.
يُعْطِ — was given. The verb 'be given', here passive (Iblis receives, an unnamed giver acts) and pushed by the preceding negator into its clipped (jussive) ending, which is why its final vowel drops. So two grammatical facts ride on it: passive voice and the cut-short shape forced by 'did not'.
