And they adorned it with phrases found in the speech of scholars who have uttered them.
وَزَخْرَفُوهُ — And they adorned it. 'and they gilded, dressed it up' — 'wa' plus past 'they adorned', the -u marking 'they', 'it' attached; form-II 'embellish'.

زخرفَ — he embellished. A past-tense verb holding its own 'he' subject and reaching for the object after it. It opens this third figure's portrait by naming what he did to his words, with the doer carried inside the verb, not stated apart.
