How to say “al-Barmaki” in Arabic, with pronunciation and an example from OpenArabic texts.
لَمْ أَرَ أَبَرَّ مِنْ الْفَضْلِ بْنِ يَحْيَى الْبَرْمَكِيِّ بِأَبِيهِ،
I have never seen anyone more dutiful to his father than al-Fadl ibn Yahya al-Barmaki.
الْبَرْمَكِيِّ — al-Barmaki. This is a 'belonging-to-a-tribe/family' adjective, formed by adding a -iyy ending to a clan name to mean 'of the so-and-so family'. It rounds off the full name and stays in the genitive to agree with the names it describes. Arabic turns places, tribes, and families into such relational adjectives with this one suffix.
