How to say “beware” in Arabic, with pronunciation and real example sentences from OpenArabic texts.
فصل إيّاك والمعاصي فإنها أزالت عزّ اسجدوا، وأخرجت إقطاع اسكن يا آدم
Beware of sins, for they removed the honor of 'bow down,' and expelled the estate of 'dwell, O Adam.'
إِيَّاكَ — beware. iyyaka = '(beware) you'; with the following 'wa-' it forms the warning 'beware of…'. The '-ka' is 'you'.
From: Adam's Descent →ولقد وصينا الذين أوتوا الكتاب من قبلكم وإياكم أن اتقوا الله فبالله ؛
And We have certainly instructed those who were given the Scripture before you and yourselves to fear God;
وَإِيَّاكُمْ — and yourselves. This is the bound wa- 'and' plus a special standalone object-pronoun form, iyya-kum 'you (plural)'. Arabic uses this iyya- carrier when an object pronoun cannot attach to a verb, so here it adds 'and yourselves' to the list of those instructed; the -kum addresses the group.
