وكان الحسن دائم الحزن، كثير البكاء، مطالبا نفسه بالحقائق،
Al-Hasan was constantly sorrowful, often weeping, demanding truths of himself,
مُطَالِبًا — demanding. This is an active participle, 'demanding', serving as another predicate of the copula and so taking the object form. As a doer-noun it carries a verb-like force and reaches out to its own object next.
