It is said that patience is the steadiness that serves as the driving force of reason and religion in opposing the impulses of desire and lust.
الْهَوَى — desire. A noun ('desire') owned by the rival 'driving force' before it, closing that link as 'the prompter of desire'. As the owner term it takes the genitive ending. Its shape ends in a long vowel that does not take the usual visible case marks.
From: Patience and the Human Self →
The second case is that power and dominance are with the instigator of desire.
الْهَوَى — of desire. This definite noun is the owner in the 'instigator of desire' pairing and stands in the genitive. The two nouns are joined by simple adjacency with no separate 'of', and this owner noun says whose instigator is meant.
From: Three States of the Heart →
One of the believer's states is that the struggle is a fierce, alternating contest between the call of religion and the call of desire.
الْهَوَى — the desire. A noun with 'al-' that owns the preceding 'call', giving 'the call of desire'. It carries the genitive owner ending and names the inner pull that opposes the call of religion.
From: Staying Firm in Faith →
So beware, beware of being deceived by your resolve to abandon desire.
الْهَوَى — desire. A noun naming base desire, the owned half of 'abandoning of desire'. That owner role puts it in the 'of...' ending. It names the inner craving the resolve hopes to drop, the thing whose abandonment, the line warns, you must not be too sure of.
