How to say “desires” in Arabic, with pronunciation and real example sentences from OpenArabic texts.
فصوتت ميزان شهوات زليخا بذلك الصبي،
The scales of Zuleikha's desires tipped because of that boy.
شَهَوَاتِ — of desires. This noun continues the possessive run: it is owned by 'the balance' and in turn owns the name after it, forming a three-link chain 'the balance of the desires of Zuleikha'. Standing as a possessor, it takes the -i ending of that slot.
From: The Story of Prophet Joseph →وَالْخَيْلُ الْمَوْسُومَةُ وَالْأَنْعَامُ وَالْحَرْثَ فَلِلشَّهَوَاتِ حِيْلَةٍ غِيَارٍ،
And the branded horses, the livestock, and the cultivated fields — desires have a deceitful device for substitution.
فَلِلشَّهَوَاتِ — so for the desires. A layered word: the prefix fa- ('so/then') marks a turn to the consequence, then the preposition li- ('for') governs a noun carrying al- ('the'). So fa- pivots the thought and li- assigns the following noun its genitive object role. Together they set up 'so for the desires ...', steering from the list to the moral point.
