وَأَحَبَّ أَنْ لَا يَنْفِرَ وَيَتْعَبَ قَلْبُهُ أَمَرَهُ بِالصِّدْقِ
And he preferred that he not drive him away or let his heart grow weary, and he commanded him to be truthful.
يَنْفِرَ — drive away. A present-tense verb 'drive away' whose ending is in the subjunctive because of the earlier 'that', read actively as the elder avoiding repelling the follower. Its 'he' subject is inside the form.
