How to say “engagement” in Arabic, with pronunciation and real example sentences from OpenArabic texts.
وهم من أهل الخوض مع الخائضين المكذبين بيوم الدين
And they are among those who engage in vain talk along with those who deny the Day of Judgment.
الْخَوْضِ — vain talk. This noun carries 'the' and is owned by 'people' before it: the people of plunging into idle talk. As the possessed half it takes the genitive ending; the two nouns sit directly together for 'of'.
From: Prayer and Charity →ما هذا الخوض في الفضول إنما هو كتاب وسنة بس،
What is this engagement in trivialities? It is nothing but the Book and the Sunnah.
الخَوْضُ — the engagement. The al- makes this definite, 'the plunging / engagement'. It is the noun the question is about, named by the demonstrative before it, and carries the -u subject-style ending as the focus of the rhetorical question.
