How to say “followed” in Arabic, with pronunciation and real example sentences from OpenArabic texts.
واستثنى من أولئك من قبل هداه واتبع رضاه
Except those whom He guided beforehand and who followed His pleasure.
وَاتَّبَعَ — and followed. The wa- adds a second action, a past-tense verb in the pattern meaning to follow closely, with its 'he' subject inside. Coordinated with the guidance, it describes the same person now following; the doubling-style pattern stresses earnest following.
From: Prayer and Charity →وَقَالَ تَعَالَى الْمَائِدَة قد جَاءَكُم من الله نور وَكتاب مُبين يهدي بِهِ الله من اتبع رضوانه سبل السَّلَام
And the Exalted said (in Sūrah al‑Mā'idah): “There has come to you from Allah a light and a clear Book; by it Allah guides whoever follows His good pleasure to the ways of peace.”
اتَّبَعَ — he follows. Past-tense verb, 'he follows', with its 'he' built in, used in a general sense inside the 'whoever' clause. The past form here reads as a timeless 'follows'.
