How many a man has gotten angry at his child or friend, uttered a harsh word that separated them, or committed a terrible deed that led to enmity.
قَاسِيَةً — harsh. An adjective 'harsh' describing the word. It trails its noun and copies its indefinite ending, agreeing with it: a harsh word.
From: Restraining Anger →تَعَرَّضَ إِبْنُ الْجَوْزِيِّ فِي شَيْخُوخَتِهِ لِمِحْنَةٍ قَاسِيَةٍ
In his old age, Ibn al-Jawzi was subjected to a severe trial.
قَاسِيَةٍ — severe. A feminine adjective 'severe' describing the trial, and it copies that noun's feminine gender and indefinite, genitive case. Arabic adjectives follow their noun and echo its features, so the matching endings are what bind this description to 'trial'.
