وَلَدِهِ — his child. A noun 'child' with an attached 'his' fused on, governed by the preceding 'at': at his child. The possessor rides on the suffix; the noun sits in the form 'at' requires.

وَوَلَدٍ — and child. This is wa- joined to a second noun governed by the same preposition 'above', 'and a child'. The coordinating wa- means this item matches the case of the noun it is joined to, so it too takes the indefinite post-preposition ending.
