How to say “I withheld” in Arabic, with pronunciation and an example from OpenArabic texts.
قَالَ أَلَيْسَ قَدْ حَمَلْتُهَا عَلَى ظَهْرِي، وَحَبَسْتُ نَفْيًا عَلَيْهَا؟
Did I not already carry her on my back and spare her from exile?
وَحَبَسْتُ — and I withheld. The front wa- adds a second boast, and the verb under it is a completed-action 'I withheld / spared' with the 'I' subject built in. So the word means 'and I kept back', joined to the carrying claim. It leans on the object after it to name what he spared her from.
