الْمَرَضِ — in illness. The owning noun closing the 'increase of the illness' pair. Its 'the' makes the phrase definite, naming the illness as what might increase.

مرض — got sick. A past-tense verb, 'fell sick', carrying its own 'it' subject, the donkey. The plain past simply records the next event in the tale.
