  A person may be rewarded for teaching it with the right intention, if Allah wills.

  بِالنِّيَّةِ — with the intention. This is 'with / by' plus 'the intention'. The 'bi-' marks the inner condition that makes the teaching reward-worthy — done WITH the right intention. It governs the genitive. The whole point hangs on this attached motive.

• ومن اتقى الله فيها وكتب لقضاة العدل وباشر الأيتام والصدقات ومال الأوقاف والمدارس ولزم الأمانة واتقى فيه فهذا محمود مأجور بنيته،

  Whoever fears Allah in it, writes for just judges, handles the affairs of orphans and charities, manages endowment and school funds, and adheres to honesty, such a person is praised and rewarded for his intention.

  بِنِيَّتِهِ — for his intention. This is 'for / by' plus 'his intention'. The 'bi-' marks the ground of the reward — he is recompensed BECAUSE OF his intention. It governs the genitive, and the pronoun ties the motive to him. The whole verdict turns on this inner aim.

• وإن جعل الطلب له مأكله ودكانا ، فالأعمال بالنيات ،

  And if he makes seeking knowledge his means of livelihood and business, then actions are judged by intentions,

  بِالنِّيَّاتِ — are judged by intentions. The prefix bi- 'by, according to' opens the word and forces the following noun into the possessed ending, while al- marks it definite: 'by the intentions'. It is the comment on 'the deeds', stating that deeds count according to their intentions; bi- sets up that 'judged by' relationship with no spoken 'is'.

  And enable us to do what pleases Him in our speech, deeds, and intentions,
