  فَيَرُدُّ — then is driven back. The fa- prefix means 'then/so', moving the narrative forward, and the verb itself is in its passive shape: the army is acted upon, driven back, rather than doing the driving. Arabic marks the passive by changing the internal vowels of the verb rather than adding a helper word like English 'is'.
