The Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, said: Islam is to bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except God and that Muhammad is the Messenger of God, and to establish the prayer.
الْإِسْلَامُ — Islam. The subject-starting noun of the definition that follows, naming the topic 'Islam'. Carrying al- ('the'), it is fully definite and stands as the thing about to be defined; everything after it is the explanation of what it consists of. Arabic can open such a sentence with the topic noun and let a whole clause serve as its predicate.
