How to say “might” in Arabic, with pronunciation and real example sentences from OpenArabic texts.
أَعْطَتْ نَفسه المطمئنة مَا وصلت إِلَيْهِ من الذل لعظمته والانكسار لعزته
His tranquil soul gives what it reached in humility to His greatness and in submission to His might.
لِعِزَّتِهِ — to His might. 'Li-' (to / before) fused with 'might' plus '-hi' (His) attached, genitive — brokenness 'before His might'. The 'li-' names what the submission bows to.
From: Humility Before the Divine →وَإِذا تعرفوا إِلَى مُلُوكهمْ وكبرائهم وتقربوا إِلَيْهِم لينالوا بهم الْعِزَّة والرفعة فتعرف أَنْت إِلَى الله وتودد إِلَيْهِ
And if they seek to know their kings and leaders and draw close to them to obtain honor and elevation through them, you seek to know God and draw close to Him.
العِزَّةَ — honor. The object of 'obtain', in the accusative '-a'. The noun means might and high standing, the prize the courtiers chase through their patrons.
From: Contentment with What God Wills →كم مطمئن في عزته أخذه بعزته بياتا،
How many, secure in their pride, did He take by His might overnight,
بِعِزَّتِهِ — by His might. The 'with/by' prefix is a preposition forcing the genitive and marking the means of the seizing, and the noun it governs carries an attached 'his' pointing back to Allah. So the word means 'by His might', and the same root used for the man's pride now names God's overpowering strength, a deliberate echo.
